China to import Spanish pigmeat

An agreement was reached last week between China and Spain regarding the import of Spanish pigmeat and pigmeat products to increase Chinese domestic stocks, according to a report by the Dow Jones Information Service.

The Chinese General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine confirmed that both countries had signed an agreement regulating the inspection and quarantine of imported Spanish pigmeat, thus paving the way for imports.

A timeline for imports has not been made available yet.

Background to the agreement is the strong increase in Chinese food prices, especially for pork, which is a staple food. It has increased in October by 6.5% after having reached a peak in August at the highest level for 11 years.
