A large number of beneficial and pathogenic bacterial species reside in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of pigs. The partial bans imposed on antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) in various countries since the mid-1980s has lead to increased research in the development of different dietary strategies to inhibit the growth of the pathogenic bacteria.
