The research should show to what extent the pig sectors in the various member states are contaminated – according to the Dutch Product Board for Livestock and Meat (PVE).
As a consequence of the research, guidelines shall be written to fight the bacteria. The research project will last until the end of September 2007.
Tests will be taken in e.g. slaughterhouses – the number of samples, between six and 20, depends on the abattoirs’ slaughtering capacity.
In the Netherlands, the pig sector started with a compulsory research into salmonella
infection on fattening pig farms and slaughterhouses in February last year.
