Danish pigs take plane to Russia

Danish farmers are facing tough animal welfare restrictions when it comes to transporting their swine herds to the burgeoning market in Russia.

The rules include giving the animals 24 hours of rest for every day they travel, The Copenhagen Post reported. So the farmers have decided to ship 10,000 pigs by cargo plane over the next 12 months.

“It will be expensive,” said Kent Skaaning of Dan-Invest, a group of Danish agricultural investors. “It’s far cheaper to drive them by truck. But we’ve chosen this solution (flying) out of necessity.”
