There was lots to enjoy in Qingdao, China, from 19-21 September. The first edition of EuroTier China was held just over on the other side of the metropolis on China’s east coast. Here too, Pig Progress took a good look around.
For the first time in history – and as things now stand, probably the last – VIV and EuroTier were both held in the same city and on the same dates, although not at the same venue. For EuroTier especially, this was a big step. Until last year the show was always held in Germany where it has enjoyed massive success with record numbers of visitors every 2 years.

At EuroTier 2018, however, the show announced that it would be spreading its wings and aiming for the world under the banner of ‘EuroTier Worldwide Network’. EuroTier events were therefore scheduled in South America (Brazil, July), the Middle East (Abu Dhabi, August) and China (September). A review of the event in Brazil was published in earlier this year.

According to the organisers, the German Agricultural Society (DLG), over 22,000 livestock farming professionals from around the world visited the first edition of EuroTier China. Apart from the 3-day trade show, visitors could also enjoy 5 days of technical conferences, seminars and forums. In total, the show welcomed 293 exhibitors – most of which were of Chinese origin. Among the international exhibitors were Sano, Impextraco, Maximus and Dostofarm.
Sano – a ‘launch partner’
The German company Sano stood out particularly in the line-up – the animal nutrition company is designated as a ‘launch partner’ in the EuroTier Worldwide Network and for that reason an unmissable yellow booth could be found right at the heart of the trade show. The Bavarian company which has a strong focus on cattle and pig nutrition in its portfolio, preceded EuroTier in its international expansion by a long way.
German animal nutrition company Sano is a founding partner in the EuroTier worlwide network and had a prominent booth in Qingdao.
Over last 2 decades the company expanded into Eastern Europe and at the same time also established itself on various other continents. Its presence in China materialised when a new production plant was set up in Yangling, Shaanxi province. In an interview on the website of EuroTier, Zhiqian Ma and Ming Ni, general manager and vice-general manager, respectively, described their current activities in China which included an ‘Elite Cattlemen Programme’, a working group for the promotion of German genetics, technology and know-how in selected Chinese pork farms. And, last but not least, Sano works with the 2 largest dairy farms in China.
In the interview, both Zhiqian Ma and Ming Ni were clear about the reasons why Sano was keen to team up with EuroTier as part of their international expansion. They said, “the partnership between Sano and EuroTier has a long tradition. In Germany alone, Sano has taken part in EuroTier for many years. We see the expansion of that partnership to China and Abu Dhabi as a classic win-win situation.”
DLG: Satisfaction with EuroTier China
The organising German Agricultural Society (DLG) had good reason to be proud of the first edition of EuroTier China, explained Christopher Armstrong of DLG International. “Our objective was to create a global platform where all stakeholders can benefit from the available knowledge and experience and build a community and network to design the future of animal farming in the region collectively,” he said. “Our stakeholders across the board were satisfied with the first edition of EuroTier China and look forward to growing the trade fair and [creating] an experience similar to that at EuroTier in Hanover.”
With the completion of EuroTier China, EuroTier also completed its first international round, which included the events in Brazil and Abu Dhabi. “To deliver 3 new trade fairs on 3 different continents in a span of a few months was a mammoth undertaking,” Armstrong added. “Given the accelerated time frame to execute the first round of EuroTier-branded trade fairs and get the kind of feedback that we have now received from stakeholders: we are very pleased with what we have achieved.”
Finally, in 2020 there will be no involuntary joint location of 2 major shows in the international swine business. EuroTier China will move from Qingdao to Chengdu in the heart of China and will be held from 7-9 September 2020.
Chinese ASF edition on WeChat
At both Chinese livestock events, Misset International, publisher of Pig Progress, promoted a 36-page special edition in Chinese dedicated to African Swine Fever (ASF). The special edition, available through WeChat, was promoted on banners with a QR code. The issue explored not just the fallout from the outbreaks but what measures the Chinese pig industry can take as it re-establishes itself in the world market. Many articles in this issue take a practical management approach; they included some of the best ASF articles previously published in Pig Progress.

In addition, several articles pay attention to aspects of feeding and nutrition in relation to ASF. Other articles, for example, touched on how ASF can easily be transmitted in water and feed, how Czechia has eradicated ASF and how flies could play a role in transmitting ASF onto farms.
