Smithfield lays off 140 hog workers in Texas

30-06-2009 | |

Smithfield Foods, as part of its cutting back operations, is to lay off 140 workers from Dalhart, Texas, a Murphy-Brown facility.

Murphy-Brown, owned by Smithfield, operates the properties the parent company purchased from Premium Standard Farms in 2007. Murphy-Brown is closing its sow operations.

“We will continue to operate the nurseries and finishers at these locations,” Michael Rainwater, general manager of Murphy-Brown’s Southwest Division, said in a letter to the Texas Workforce Commission.

The permanent layoffs will happen Aug. 17. Most of those to be laid off will be people who work directly with the hogs. Others include managers, technicians and security guards.
