Tanzania hit with swine disease
Tanzanian authorities have reported the outbreak of a
deadly viral swine disease that has killed nearly 140 pigs in two regions in
less than two weeks.
The outbreak was first reported on February, 20. The livestock and fisheries
ministry ordered the movement of pigs and pork products to be highly restricted
to control the spread of the disease, as well as the destruction of pigs in the
affected regions.
The disease first hit Tanzania in 1993. In this latest outbreak, 117 pigs
died in the central region of Morogoro and while 21 others died in the
commercial capital Dar es Salaam.
