Polish pig herd is noticeably reduced
Polish pig producers have reduced their pig numbers
quite sharply.
The latest count in December 2007 revealed a herd of 17.6 million pigs,
which represents less than one million animals or 6% less than a year
previously.
Sow and piglet numbers have decreased even more on account of the poor
economic climate among sow producers.
The number of bearing sows has been reduced by 13% representing 3 million
less sows.
A yearly slaughter of around 24 million slaughter pigs is expected,
representing a 10% decrease in slaughter pigs. These figures have been
calculated on the basis that the domestic gap is not filled by foreign imports.
