Authorities kill 17 Maryland pigs
County animal control officers said that 17 free-ranging pigs, including a
large boar, were discovered and shot on properties next to a Maryland, US farm
that has been under state quarantine for about six
months.
A spokesman said that seven of those killed might have been offspring of a
sow trapped Tuesday morning outside the quarantined farm in Carroll County,
Maryland.
The properties where the pigs appeared neighbour the farm, where just over
100 pigs supposed to be kept in quarantine were reported missing last month.
The pigs were not allowed to be moved, after six were tested positive for
parasitical
trichinosis infection and nine were tested positive to
toxoplasmosis.
Officials said they don't believe the pigs recently discovered were among
the ranks of the missing.
