Dutch retailers postpone castration deadline
The Dutch supermarkets have decided to postpone the date on which they
will start selling only pork originating from pigs that were anaesthesised
The new date will be March 1, 2009; from January 1 in the original
announcement. The pig industry turned out not to be ready at July 1 to start
with anaesthesised castration - therefore the date of January 1 came too
As from September 1, the Dutch supermarkets will start to pay an
extra couple of eurocents to pigmeat suppliers. This money will eventually be
spent for purchasing CO2 anaesthetic equipment. It is hoped to collect an amount
of €3.7 million as quickly as possible.
