Ukraine allows pork imports from Brazil
The State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service of Ukraine has allowed a number of Brazilian companies to supply pork to Ukraine.
This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, Ivan Bisyuk. He also pointed out that prior to the ban that was introduced earlier this year, Brazil was the largest supplier of meat to Ukraine.
According Bisyuk permission was given for “five or six companies,” but the supplies have not yet begun. According to the data of the State Customs Service, in 2012, Brazil exported 122,700 tonnes of pork to Ukraine, or about 60% of the total imports of these products in Ukraine.
The ban on meat imports was introduced on 20 March in connection with the identification of increased levels of various harmful microorganisms in pork. In recent months, the State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service inspected the veterinary services in Brazil, as well as local producers and found no violations.
At the same time local market players say that Brazilian pork is cheaper than Ukrainian on average by 20% due to the low cost of feed and state support of exports in Brazil.
“Typically, it’s offal or processed products which is actively purchased by the producers of sausages and semi-finished products or split carcasses. The retailers take them in pursuit of a low price,” explains the CEO of the corporation Tvarinprom Sergei Hnatjuk. “With such products it is difficult to compete.”
