26-01-2011 | |

$1 billion worth of pork meat has been exported by Iowa companies from January 2010 to November 2010.

A big percentage if the exports in 2010 went to Japan, the country bought $440 million (43.8%) of total pork exports. While Mexico was the second-largest customer, purchasing $126 million or 12.6% of the total. At number three was Canada –  contributing $119 million in sales (11.8% ).

“The more we can open overseas markets such as Korea and China, the more we can help our Iowa companies take advantage of export opportunities,” said Gov. Terry Branstad.

Foreign market access
“Exports are critical to the success of the industry. The Iowa Pork Producers Association started foreign market development activities in 1989 and has generally taken two foreign trade missions a year. In 1995, the U.S. became a net exporter of pork and that status remains today,” John Weber, president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association.
