Smithfield Foods achieves top Corporate Social Responsibility rankings

11-11-2010 | |

Smithfield Foods, Inc. announced that it ranked 176th on the Maplecroft CII Benchmark, which is part of The Maplecroft Climate Innovation Indexes (CIIs), that evaluates company performance in climate-related innovation and carbon management. The Maplecroft CII Benchmark is comprised of 339 of the largest U.S. companies.

Maplecroft identified several selected strengths of Smithfield, including the fact that the company has a publicly disclosed environmental policy that includes commitments to compliance, pollution prevention and continuous improvement; publishes indicators for GHG emissions in its annual Corporate Social Responsibility report; and engages its employees on energy and emissions issues through internal communications and training programs.

Additionally, Smithfield noted that it continues to be a member company of the FTSE4Good Index, the responsible investment index calculated by global index provider FTSE Group. The FTSE4Good Index Series has been designed to measure the performance of companies that meet globally recognized corporate responsibility standards, and to facilitate investment in those companies.

The company also said that it was recognized in NEWSWEEK’s 2010 Green Rankings, which includes the 500 largest publicly traded U.S. companies. The companies are evaluated by their overall Green Score, which assess each company’s actual environmental footprint and management of that footprint (including policies and strategies), along with its reputation among environmental experts.
