Researchers at the University of Manitoba, Canada, have launched a new study to reduce the environmental impact of pig production by designing a diet that will lower the phosphorus content of manure.
The study will be a two phase project. The University’s Department of Animal Science will conduct the first phase – the animal nutrition studies. The second phase will be done by the Department of Soil Science, which will then study impact of the urine and manure on the soil.
The project is expected to take two years.
Researchers believe that if the project is successful and scientists can come up with a recipe that will reduce phosphorus it will be of enormous benefit in terms of phosphorus loading to the soil and ultimately water quality
