EFSA: Positive opinion on phytogenic additive for weaned piglets

26-04-2011 | |

The phytogenic feed additive Fresta F, produced and marketed by Delacon, has received a positive scientific opinion by the European Food Safety Authority on the safety and efficacy in use for weaned piglets.

The feed additive is a preparation of partially micro-encapsulated essential oils from caraway and lemon, dried spices and dried herbs.

Scientific opinion
Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (Feedap) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety for the target animal(s), consumer, user and the environment and the efficacy of the product for weaned piglets at a recommended dose range of 250-400 mg/kg complete feeding stuff.

The EFSA found the product to be both safe and effective. It was concluded that the product, at the minimum proposed dose (250 mg/kg complete feed), has the potential to improve the growth rate of weaned piglets.

The official summary of the research can be found online.

The company says it is the first phytogenic feed additives producing company that got a positive scientific opinion of EFSA on the safety and efficacy of one of its products.
