The hog farmer, Martin Grenier, from the Notre Dame de Lourdes area has been charged under the Animal Care Act. The offences that Mr Grenier has been charged with also consist of not providing food, water and medical attention to pigs.
Along with the charges of food and water deprivation, it was also found that Mr Grenier kept animals in unacceptable conditions. Each charge has a maximum penalty of a $10,000 fine, six months in jail or both.
In June 18, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers, as well as employees from Manitoba Agriculture were called to Grenier’s farm, where it was discovered with hundreds of dead hogs decomposing in a barn and about 2,000 more alive.
