Belarus calls for extra measures against African Swine Fever

13-01-2012 | |

The Ministry of Agriculture and Foodstuffs of Belarus has urged authorities to take on more measures in order to stop the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) in the Belarus region. This comes as Russia is in the midst of fighting ASF.

The ministry stated that in Russia pig farms have been closed and thousands of pigs were culled and total losses were more than 8 billion rubles.

The ministry has recently asked officials to carry out exercises so that there is an emergency response in place in case of an ASF occurrence. At the moment, to be able to transport pigs, only meat-processing enterprises are permitted to to do so by car, in which case disinfection should take place prior to each loading, stated the Ministry of Agriculture.

“Transportation and sale of pigs, procured from the public, shall be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the animal health rules for cleaning and disinfection of technological equipment and production facilities for organizations engaged in livestock slaughtering and meat processing,” the ministry noted.
