Australia: NSW pork producers give generously
The NSW Farmers’ Association Pork Committee in conjunction with the peak industry pork producer body Australian Pork Limited (APL), as well as Foodbank Australia, meat wholesaler B.E Campbell (NSW), Alliance Catering and the Salvation Army Streetlevel Mission, have joined forces to cater for the less fortunate this Christmas.
NSW Farmers’ Association Pork Committee Chairman Mal Gett said “this has been a challenging year for pork producers and farmers in NSW. Pork producers are competing against cheaper imports, and grain grower expectations of a record harvest have been washed away by flooding rains.”
With the kind cooperation of meat wholesaler B.E Campbell (NSW) and Alliance Catering, 175 kilos of cooked pork will be delivered to the Salvation Army Streetlevel Mission on Thursday 23rd December in readiness for the Christmas lunch for the less fortunate.
Salvation Army Captain Robbin Moulds said “what the Salvation Army Streetlevel Mission is focused on is addressing the poverty of social isolation for those people who are marginalised within the city of Sydney. Christmas time is an especially important time for these people. This year we will be hosting the Christmas lunch for those folk who attend and seek help at the centre each and every day and the people we contact on the streets. We are expecting anywhere between 600 to 800 people to attend the Christmas day lunch”.
According to the latest report conducted by the Wesley Mission, seven per cent of people in NSW went without meals due to financial hardship this year. This grim fact is reflected in Foodbank NSW having a 20 per cent increase in welfare agencies seeking support over the last 12 months.
On the Thursday 23rd December at 12.30pm the NSW Farmers’ Association Pork Committee members, APL and Foodbank staff, and volunteers will get cooking, in the kitchen and on the barbecue, to cook up a wonderful meal to say thanks to volunteers and helpers who give up their time to assist those less fortunate. The donation of the pork for the Christmas day lunch will be handed over at this lunch.
Chairman of APL and Foodbank Australia Enzo Allara said “Christmas time is the time of the year when Australians enjoy traditional pork and ham. Unfortunately not everyone is fortunate enough to enjoy these traditional foods. I am delighted to see the NSW pork producers put aside their own challenges and once again organise the supply of a significant amount of pork to the Salvation Army’s Streetlevel Mission. This is a terrific initiative that will ensure that hundreds of less privileged Australians will be able to enjoy a traditional Christmas lunch of ham and roast pork.”
