Update: Lab diagnostics for PED
The Canadian Swine Health Board (CSHB), in partnership with the Canadian Association of Swine Veterinarians (CASV), released an update on the status of laboratory diagnostic capabilities for PED testing in Canada.
This document will be updated on an ongoing basis in order to provide the most current information to industry stakeholders, and is available on the CSHB’s website here.
This CASV – CSHB collaboration also resulted in a protocol document for veterinarians to reference when collecting samples in a herd suspected of PED. This document is also available on the same website.
Surveillance through CSHB’s Canadian Swine Health Intelligence Network continues to confirm that Canada remains free of PED, and all diagnostic testing for PED has so far confirmed that the Canadian herd is negative for the disease.
PED has been long established in both Europe and Asia, and appeared in the US in mid-May, the first time the disease has been identified in North America. This disease causes vomiting and diarrhea especially in nursing piglets, with up to 100% mortality in that age group being reported.
These documents are part of a series of tools being made available to the industry to help protect herds from the PED virus. Their development are the result of an ongoing and important collaboration by CSHB and CASV.
The CSHB was formed to proactively address swine health challenges through leadership, coordination and support in the management of the health of the Canadian swine herd. Its members include the Canadian Association of Swine Veterinarians, the Canadian Association of Veterinary Colleges, the Canadian Centre for Swine Improvement, the Canadian Meat Council and the Canadian Pork Council.
