Ukraine reports ASF close to Russian border
Ukrainian veterinarian services have reported an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) on a farm in the country’s north, not far away from the border with Russia.
The outbreak concerned two pigs in the village Okhramyevychi, in the province Chernigov, Koryukovs’kyi district. It was reported to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) on September 2.
The OIE report states that the initial discovery was made on August 8 of this year, as then two pigs in the private sector were found to carry clinical ASF signs, in a location 18 km from the border with Russia. Specialists of the civil veterinary services decided to provide samples of the affected animals for laboratory studies.
To prevent the spread of the virus, a quarantine area, a protection zone (4 km) and a surveillance zone (Koryukovskaya area, about 15 km radius) have been established.
Both pigs were slaughtered.
So far, Ukraine had only reported outbreaks of African Swine Fever in the Luhansk area in January this year.
