Canadian Swine Health Intelligence Network launched
In Canada, Prince Edward Island’s Atlantic Veterinary College is helping to create a new national health initiative for pigs, CBC reports.
The Canadian Swine Health Intelligence Network is a coordinated effort to monitor the health of the national swine herd.
The new network will help pick up disease trends early at pig farms through a type of veterinary social networking.
The network was created in response to the 2005 circovirus outbreak in the pork industry. Its aim is to prevent economic damage caused by a disease, such as the devastation to the cattle industry following the BSE (Bovine spongiform encephalopathy) outbreak.
After a trial run, the hope is this model and its software could be used by other livestock industries in Canada and around the world.
