Canadian pork producers worried about PED virus

The Unites States pork industry has been affected by Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea, now Canadian producers say they are worried and feel that the pig industry is threatened in Canada.

The virus is fatal to  young pigs and have killed many piglets in the US. The virus emerged last year and sprad to many US states.

Thus far 22 US states have been affected by PED virus.

According to Egan Brockhoff, a veterinarian in Red Deer, producers and transporters of livestock should be cautious. “The virus is spread through fecal oral transmission. So we want to make sure that trucks coming back to Canada that have been near American pigs are washed, disinfected and properly dried before returning to a Canadian hog farm.”
