Major investment in Mexican pork plant

Mexico’s largest pig producer, Grupo Kuo, will invest around 2 billion pesos (US$ 100 million) to reconstruct its Sahé processing plant, near Tixpéual, Yucatán peninsula, Mexico.

Grupo Kuo, known of brands like Kekén and Kiniton, estimates the unit will open late 2021. The plant will operate in an area of 150 hectares and will use automated operating in order to process 2 million pigs annually. When the complex is ready, the factory will create more than 2,000 direct jobs and 7,000 indirect ones.

Alejandro de la Barreda Gómez, CEO of Grupo Kuo, said, “With this important announcement, we have consolidated our position as the largest pork producer in the country and reaffirmed our commitment to creating value with our stakeholders.”

Grupo Kuo: Not only a pork production company

The company also has activities as a chemical company, automotive part manufacturer and retailer across Mexico. In terms of pork production, the company has 3 slaughterhouses (2.5 million animals per year), 1 feed factory (725,000 tonnes annually) and 1 farm (over 76,500 sows).

The investment plans in the processing plant form part of a larger project to build more multiplication farms, additional commercial farms and to construct additional lines in its food processing plant. The total investment package is worth 6 billion pesos (US$ 300 million).

Grupo Kuo supplies the domestic market and exports pig meat to 7 countries in Asia and the Americas, being Japan, South Korea, China and Hong Kong, as well as the United States, Canada and Chile.

Mr De la Barreda Gómez stated that the company’s goal is to produce the highest quality food for its consumers all over the world and to create opportunities for people where they have their units.

Pork production in Mexico increased 4% in 2019

Estimates from the market indicate that in 2020 pork production in Mexico increased 4% compared to 2019. Until last July, the Agro-food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) reported that 931,327 tonnes were produced, which was 3.7% more than in the same period last year.
