Wrapping up October: What’s new in the world of pigs?

Both PRRS and Mycoplasma are very present in October’s pig business news updates – new vaccines and manuals are on their way. Obviously Covid-19 caused shows to be postponed or cancelled – and webinars to be held. Here’s what happened in October 2020.

ECO Animal Health and Pirbright to develop PRRS vaccines

ECO Animal Health is funding 2 projects with The Pirbright Institute to develop vaccine candidates for Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome virus (PRRSv). In the first18-month development project, Pirbright will test 2 vaccine candidates that use The Vaccine Group’s vaccine technology to assess their effectiveness at tackling PRRSv in pigs. The second will see Pirbright develop an improved killed vaccine.

PRRSGard vaccine now available in US market

More PRRS news, as Pharmgate Animal Health has announced that PRRSGard, a modified-live vaccine, is available in the US. PRRSGard is a 1ml, single-dose recombinant chimeric vaccine for PRRSv.

Hipra launches PCV2 and M. hyo vaccine in Europe

Hipra launches its new vaccine Mhyosphere PCV ID. According to the company, it is the first needle-free intradermal vaccine against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyo) and PCV2, all in one, to the European market. The vaccine would be the 1st based on an inactivated recombinant M. hyo strain.

Zoetis releases update of M. hyo manual

Talking about M. hyo, Zoetis has released an updated booklet ’’ with 14 articles developed by swine-disease specialists. An updated section on breeding-herd classifications is included, as well as a new section on fogging for controlled exposure to M. hyo.

Disease mitigation technology now available

Farm Health Guardian, a new real-time disease mitigation technology platform, is now available for pork and poultry producers and integrators throughout North America, Europe and the UK. Brought to market by Be Seen Be Safe, the patented system tracks and records movement in and out of production facilities in real time, providing fast, confidential ways to record all staff, visitor and vehicle movement.

Magapor inaugurates new research laboratory in Spain

Magapor has inaugurated the company’s most recent project – a research laboratory in the Joint Research Center with Companies (CEMINEM) in collaboration with the University of Zaragoza in Spain. The centre will allow companies to carry out research projects. Magapor will continue developing the research of substances present in plastic packaging for semen doses that have reprotoxic effects by migration with semen.

DSM completes acquisition of Erber Group

Royal DSM has acquired Erber Group’s Biomin and Romer Labs. Biomin specialises primarily in mycotoxin risk management and gut health performance management, while Romer Labs focuses on food and feed safety diagnostic solutions. News of the planned acquisition broke in June this year.

Millions raised to build world’s largest insect farm

Ÿnsect has extended its funding to US$ 372 million to build the world's largest insect farm in France. Completed in 2022, the farm will produce 100,000 tonnes of insect products annually. Ÿnsect has created a patented process for cultivating mealworm to produce a variety of digestible protein and fertiliser products. These products replace animal proteins consumed in the supply chain by fish and livestock.

Barentz partners with Bioiberica and acquires Maroon

Barentz, distributor of life science ingredients, has partnered with Spanish Bioiberica Animal Nutrition for the exclusive distribution of Bioiberica’s Palbio and Nucleoforce animal nutrition lines in Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Great Britain and Ireland. Palbio is a source of hydrolysed proteins in the form of L-α-amino acids and bioactive peptides; Nucleoforce is a concentrate of free nucleotides and active precursors from yeast extracts.

Meanwhile, Barentz has entered into an agreement to acquire Maroon Group, a specialty distributor operating across the US and Canada.

Evonik concentrates MetAmino production at 3 hubs

Evonik will cluster its MetAmino (DL-methionine) production at 3 international hubs (Americas, Europe, and Asia). DL-methionine is an essential amino acid used in modern feed formulation. Evonik will close the smallest of its MetAmino plants in Wesseling, Germany, with a capacity of 65,000 tonnes per year, and invest about € 25 million into upgrading the plant to safeguard long-term supply to the Antwerp site.

Lallemand opens office in Vietnam

Lallemand Animal Nutrition has opened an office in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to distribute the portfolio, including feed additives, for ruminants, pork, poultry, and aquaculture throughout the country.

Hamlet Protein: Webinars in times of Covid-19

In times of Covid-19, Hamlet Protein held various webinars in October. One included Justin Sherrard, global strategist animal protein at Rabobank, who discussed the current situation in the swine market and 2021 outlook. In a different session for North America, Joe Kerns spoke on current and expected market developments. In Germany the company held a small-scale Feed Your Brain seminar, focusing on young animal nutrition in swine and poultry.

The company also launched a new corporate website to offer information on feeding solutions and to allow for a deep dive in key challenges producers face.

Adisseo webinar on net energy and feed formulation

Dr Jean Noblet, who spend his career at the INRAe and who has worked for many years on net energy and coordinated many studies on the topic, participated in a webinar organised by FeedChannel, an Adisseo network, and which attracted over 500 people in September. He answered questions from nutritionists from around the world. The full webinar is accessible on the platform.

Manuka Biotech enters Malaysia

Manuka Biotech has introduced a range of functional and innovative fatty acid additives to Malaysia and the world. The company is a subsidiary brand under butyrate salt manufacturer, Singao, the 1st in China to launch water-soluble micro-encapsulated fat powder and its MCT series for animal feed application.

Cargill study: consumer support of farmers growing

A recent Cargill study found the majority of consumers stand ready to rally around farmers in support of their efforts to put food on tables around the globe. Consumer recognition for the challenges and expectations farmers face grew amid the Covid-19 pandemic, as processing and transportation bottlenecks, especially in the protein industry, stretched the global food supply.

CPF’s swine business expanding into China

Charoen Pokphand Foods’ (CPF) pig business currently covers 7 countries – Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Russia and Canada – but the company will now proceed with the acquisition of a swine business in China. Furthermore, CPF will increase green revenue to 30% this year. The company has an environmentally-friendly feed innovation to reduce nitrogen in manure by 20-30%, equivalent to a reduction of 90 tonnes of nitrous oxide emission.

VIV celebrates 20 years in China

Over 16,500 visitors attended VIV Qingdao 2020 held from 17-19 September. Global buyers joined virtually, registering over 55,000 pageviews. Included in the conference was the Global Pig Genetic Improvement Summit, and discussions around biosecurity measures on pig farms and sustainable solutions for animal waste treatment. VIV Qingdao 2021 is scheduled for 15-17 September next year.

Agromek postponed

Restrictions and the current transmission of Covid-19 mean a postponement of Danish animal husbandry trade show Agromek, which would have taken place in MCH Messecenter Herning in Denmark from 19-22 January 2021. Agromek was in 2018 visited by 40,214 visitors from 51 countries and had 540 exhibitors.

Ildex Vietnam set for July 2021

The eighth international livestock, dairy, meat processing and aquaculture exposition – Ildex Vietnam 2021 – will open its doors to industry professionals and trade visitors again from 21-23 July 2021. The expo, which includes all groups of livestock management and meat processing, will occupy 10,000 m2 at the Saigon Exhibition & Convention Center.
