NPPC: No to federal involvement in cage ban

08-06-2012 | |

The US National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) has strongly agitated against a federal law banning cage egg production in poultry, at the second day of the World Pork Expo 2012 in Des Moines, Iowa.

The bill, which was introduced earlier this year in the House of Representatives, would establish a national housing standard for egg laying hens, and has been supported by the Association of California Egg Farmers as well as the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the United Egg Producers (UEP).

Fearing similar legislative action may be taken in other agricultural industries, the NPPC strongly feels that the federal administration should stay away from interfering with market conditions.

Audrey Adamson, NPPC, stated rather fiercely in a press conference: “To produce these eggs, we need voluntary standards. Why do we need the federal government to say XYZ? Scratch your head about that!”

She added, “Producers will going to be shut out of the market due to this legislation. We – the farmers – know what is best.”
