Thailand: Breeder pigs shortage, rising pig costs

08-08-2011 | |

A shortage of female breeder pigs has resulted in a 25-30% drop in the amount of pork entering the market, reports the Thailand Swine Raisers Association, requesting the Commerce Ministry to help the pig raisers affected by a virus outbreak, increase the number of female breeder pigs, instead of trying to control prices.

Pig farmers have already suffered with rising production costs for which the ministry has imposed price controls on Thai retail tenderloin, holding it to 152 baht/kg, which many pork vendors have opposed, saying it should  control the price of pork at the slaughterhouse instead.
