US: Another retailer drops Iowa Select Farms after pig abuse video

08-07-2011 | |

Recently, Iowa Select Farms made headlines due to a video release showing pig abuse committed by the producer.

Costco is the latest retailer to have dropped Iowa Select Farms and is no longer stocking pork from the producer, following pull outs by Kroger and Safeway.

The video came to light by group Mercy for Animals. An employee of the group worked at Iowa Select Farms for two months, filming conditions at the farm in Kamrar, Iowa.

Currently Iowa lawmakers are considering a bill that would make it a felony for such undercover investigations.
According to a report by Wall Street Journal, Democratic state Sen. Tom Rielly said the video which came to light “is exactly why we need a bill like this.” He further added that sections of the video were staged to advance the group’s agenda.

“They’d like people not to eat eggs, hamburgers, bacon.” The group is “creating these salacious images to put this important industry to Iowa in a bad light.”

Director of investigations at Mercy for Animals, Daniel Hauffsaid, said “no footage was staged and that “legislators should be working to improve laws to protect animals, not trying to protect the abusers.”
