Boar stud facility as a last step of the integration

The Mexican Olea Ruiz family has developed its Grupo Soles enterprise into many parts of the agricultural business. It consists of a swine integration, from AI to slaughter. Recently, a new boarstud facility was added to the family’s business plant near the city of Obregon.

AI vs natural-service systems
Pig genetics has become so technologically sophisticated in recent years that there are significant reasons to choose artificial insemination over some natural-service systems. Purchasing semen can not only make use of new, superior genetics at a potentially lower cost, but it offers less risk of disease transmission.

One can imagine that biosecurity is paramount in such an operation. The possibility of viruses or any strain of sperm disease permeating the AI process could be devastating, so it was imperative that it be free of any outside bacteria and viruses. To that end, a modern High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter system was installed. It is described by the US Department of Energy as the type of air filter, that literally removes 99.97% of dust, pollen, mould, bacteria, and any other airborne particles. In addition, this system of filters employs technology that ensures against the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) virus. The facility needed to be a well-insulated ‘tight’ or ‘sealed’ building. To be most effective, a sealed building is the result of a combination of ventilation and insulation, to ensure that the building’s interior can be controlled as needed. American housing and equipment company Betco was picked to construct this project.

Ventilation
Because the atmosphere is a mixture of dry air and invisible water vapour, it is subject to change, depending on weather conditions. Tunnel ventilation is a type of exhaust system, whereby exhaust fans mounted at one end of a building, act as pumps to move air through the interior of the building. The primary result is the removal of heat and moisture from the building’s interior. In addition, it limits the build up of harmful gases, such as ammonia and carbon dioxide.

Ultimately, the goal was to adjust the interior of the building to the desired effect, regardless of the outside climate. Another part of the ventilation system is called evaporative cooling, which refers to the cooling effect produced when water evaporates. Evaporative cooling pads were mounted on the side of the boar stud building and are designed to cool the outside air as it is pulled through pads and into the interior of the building. Evaporative cooling is the most inexpensive way to cool the air – much cheaper than using refrigerants and compressors.Temperatures can become a problem in Rosario Tesopaco County, where the boar stud facility is located. During the summer months, heat can reach 40ºC (104 degrees F) and above, hence insulation was part of the equation. It was possible to insulate the building sidewalls with six inches of fibreglass and the drop ceilings with six inches of cellulose to control the building’s interior. All in all, the project epitomises the approach to building a succesful business enterprise. It is this kind of philosophy that will ensure a company like the Olea Ruiz family’s Grupo Soles to find it’s niche, no matter what direction it chooses to go.
