Russia meat production: pork growing
The production of pig meat in the Russian Federation in the first half of 2009 has increased by 15%.
One of the main reasons for the pork production growth is related to the financial crisis. Amid the crisis, purchase demand shifted to the so-called basic products, i.e. essential products. In total, food sales in Russia fell 1.3% in the first half of the year.
Experts also point out that the restrictions on the pork import, imposed by Rosselkhoznadzor (Russian veterinary service) due to the spread of the novel influenza A virus (H1N1), also previously known as 'swine flu', had an additional impact on the development of pig farming.
The import quotas cuts together with the currency rate changes, leading to a substantial rise in prices for the imported meat, also played a positive part.
Poultry & beef
According to experts, there is a shift in demand in the meat market to relatively cheap poultry meat. In the first half of the year the poultry meat demand increased 10%, the production growth – up to 11,3%. The poultry share of the total production of stock and poultry for slaughter in the first half of the year reached 56,4%.
In the meantime, beef production in the first half of the year fell 12.9%.
