Germany: Increased pressure to eradicate swine fever

23-03-2009 | |

German officials have urged to step up the eradication of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) in wild boars. The discussion was started up again after an outbreak in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, writes the German agricultural magazine Top Agrar.

Peter Hauk, the minister for Nutrition and Rural Areas of the state of Baden-Württemberg, said: “The renewed outbreak of CSF in Rhineland-Palatinate and the continuous disease pressure in France increases the danger of transfer to Baden-Württemberg. This should be prevented in all circumstances – that’s why the wildlife rangers in the state have been urged to use prophylaxis measures to prevent CSF outbreaks.”

He continued to say that hunters should also pay attention to limit the amounts of feed used during e.g. hunting as much as possible. For hygiene reasons should no-one enter pig production sites wearing used hunting outfits; feed for wild boars should be stored.

He referred to a 10-points-recommendation for efficient hunting, set up by experts.

In this particular state of Germany, CSF occurred for the last time in 1998-1999. With many vaccinations and large hunting activities, the outbreak could be contained.
