Eartags allowed in Argentinian pig industry

19-03-2009 | |

The Argintinian Senate has decided to modernise its pig industry’s identification system, the German agricultural magazine Top Agrar writes.

In the new situation, pig producers are allowed to use eartags, tattoos and electronic devices, next to brandmarking and cuttings.

In addition, the period in which the animals will have to be marked, will be brought back from six months to 45 days. By applying these changes, the traceability in the food production chain should improve and product security increased, the government hopes.

This complying with international conventions would be necessary, especially for future growth of exports.
