Smithfield closing six pork plants in USA

18-02-2009 | |

Apart from a major restructuring operation, Smithfield Foods has also announced to close six pork processing plants in the USA by December 2009, resulting in a reduction of about 1,800 jobs in the pork group.

The plant closings are throughout the USA – they can be found in Virginia, Florda, North Carolina, Kansas, Ohio and Nebraska.

The goal of the closing and the restructuring, Smithfield Foods CEO, C. Larry Pope said, is to run its pork processing plants at 90% of capacity.

This would provide a low-cost platform and flexibility to meet customer needs in peak periods. “Even if the recession goes deeper, this puts us in a much stronger competitive position to deal with that.”
