DuPont meets Salmonella EN Testing criteria

25-11-2009 | |

With the stringent new EU legislation on Salmonella control starting to come into force across the European pig production industry the most proven livestock disinfectant in the world DuPont™ Virkon S has recently been re-evaluated at Wageningen University in The Netherlands to specifically address the EU legislation.

The latest EN 1656 Salmonella studies confirmed that Virkon® S achieved excellent dilution rates of 1:100 and 1:200 against all of the five most prevalent human health-related strains of Salmonella – S. enteritidis, S. typhimurium, S. virchow, S. infantis and S. hadar

Contamination with the five Salmonella strains known to be associated with regular human food poisoning will make it difficult for producers to sell their animals. It has therefore never been more important for producers to start reassessing and implementing an effective routine Salmonella biosecurity strategy.

Virkon S is designed for use in all Salmonella prevention and decontamination procedures in pig production including the disinfection of surfaces, equipment, foot dips and vehicle wheel dips and cold fogging at a 1:100 dilution rate.©

Pig veterinary specialist Jake Waddilove MRCVS explains, “Enhanced Salmonella biosecurity is an area that most producers are giving great thought to, but this needs to be worked at and tailored to specific farms, with constant review. Producers need to think carefully about how Salmonella can get onto farm and then think of policies to try and prevent this.”
