Japanese market reopens for Irish pork

14-01-2009 | |

Japanese officials have confirmed that its market is fully open for Irish pork products in the wake of the dioxin scare of last year.

The Japanese market was never actually formally closed to Irish pork, but having accepted reassurances from the Irish Government, the Japanese ministry have now clarified that the market is open.

Pork is Irelands’ single biggest food export to Japan, with a market worth €16 million annually, according to Irish Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith. He said there would be a concerted new drive by his department and by Bord Bia to increase the market share of Irish pork.
