Philippines: slaughterhouse complaints

09-09-2008 | |

Meat vendors and dealers have complained that the animals slaughtered at the city’s new slaughterhouse in Barangay Tacas, Jaro in the Philippines are lacking parts when returned back to them after slaughtering.

Hog portions missing
According to one news vendor, the internal parts of the slaughtered hogs like the intestines are not returned to them and that some portions of the hogs are missing.

Since the new abattoir began operating they have lost several kilos of pork meat and other internal parts of the hogs. He noticed that portions in between the hog’s stomach are usually cut off, said the vendor.

According to the vendor, they pay P300 pesos for the slaughter of each hog, yet it has missing body parts when they receive it back.

Addressing the issue
City Veterinarian Dr. Tomas Forteza, was called upon to address the issue as hundreds of pesos are lost everyday. Forteza is in charge of the new slaughterhouse.

The new slaughterhouse, which is double A standard, started operations last May. The slaughterhouse, equipped with modern facilities, can accommodate more than 600 heads of hogs daily.
