Aid package ahead for Scottish pig producers
First Minister Alex Salmond stated during a meeting
with NFU Scotland representatives at Turriff Show that a package of aid to help
Scotland's pig producers will be announced later this month.
The aid in response to the huge impact of last
August's
foot-and-mouth
outbreak on the Scottish pig sector, had however been
expected to be announced last month. Accroding to Mr Salmond the delay was due
to the Vion merger Scotland's biggest pig processor, Grampian Country Food
Group.
Although specifics of the Scottish Governments' package has not
been announced it will almost certainly be based on the recommendations of an
industry taskforce set up in May.
Rural Affairs Cabinet Secretary Richard Lochhead came in
for criticism for ignoring pig producers, whose financial troubles following the
foot-and-mouth
outbreak were only greatened by
the collapse in global pig prices and escalating feed costs.
This led to
losses of up to £25 on every finished pig sold for more than eight
months.
