Cyprus: Officially free from FMD
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has
deemed Cyrprus to be officially free from FMD.
On November 6, 2007, an outbreak of FMD was
registered on the island. Much debate ensued among specialists and livestock
farmers as to whether in fact it was the deadly disease.
The
authorities, however, culled around 330 suspected animals and the EU placed a
ban on Cypriot meat and dairy product exports, which was subsequently
lifted.
