FMD fears shut down Danish slaughterhouse
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration announced
that it had temporarily closed a slaughterhouse near Copenhagen over fears that
a pig due to be slaughtered was infected with foot-and-mouth
disease.
A pig sent to the slaughterhouse in Ringsted, some 60 kilometres southwest of
Copenhagen, had shown signs of the disease.
The animal and the farm it came from were to be examined by authorities to
confirm whether it was indeed a case of the highly contagious viral disease that
can affect all cloven-footed animals. No confirmation of an outbreak has been
made yet.
