Efficiency of Danish pig lost at slaughter
Danish piglets are more economic in the stall phase of
pork production, but on balance the financial advantages
This is the conclusion of a practical study carried out between 2006 and 2007
by the Chamber of Agriculture of the state of Lower Saxony in Germany
(Landwirtschaftskamer Niedersachsen), whereby productivity results of piglets
imported from Denmark were compared with those of local farms in the province.
Danish piglets have a better feed conversion rate and grow faster. However,
at the end of the day, earnings per slaughter pig are lower. The difference in
earnings revealed an advantage of €2,19 for each German pig.
researchers came to the conclusion that the Danish pigs perform badly in
classification in the slaughterhouses. Those which are badly sorted in the
slaughterhouses can lead to a disadvantage of €0.10 per kilo slaughterweight.
