The National FFA Organisation recently awarded the National Pork Board with FFA’s special Distinguished Service Citation and a 25-Year Milestone Sponsor Award.

Helping young people learn
“We have been fortunate to partner with the National Pork Board for many years,” says Doug Loudenslager, chief operating officer for the National FFA Organisation and the National FFA Foundation. “We share an appreciation for the importance of helping young people learn about the tremendous opportunities in agriculture.”

The National FFA Organisation boasts 507,416 student members in 7,439 local FFA chapters nationwide who are preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture. Interest in FFA continues to grow, says Loudenslager, who notes that the organisation set a 31-year record for FFA membership this year. About one third of these students have a farm background, one third are rural/non-farm, and the remaining third are urban.

Greatly contributed
During the 81st National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, the National Pork Board accepted the Distinguished Service Citation, which recognises clubs, agencies and organisations that have greatly contributed to agricultural science education and FFA programmes. Members of the Iowa State and National FFA Organisation staff nominated the National Pork Board, and the National FFA Board of Directors approved the nomination.

“Agriculture has changed a lot in the past 25 years, becoming much more focused on technology and life sciences,” says Steve Murphy, former CEO for the National Pork Board, who received the Honorary American FFA Degree during the National FFA Convention. “We need the brightest, best students to discover the opportunities available in agriculture today, and this needs to start at a young age. FFA offers a great way to connect young people with where their food comes from.”
