Tyson Foods discussing pork deal with Chinese
The largest meat producer in the US, Tyson Foods, has commenced discussions with China regarding purchases of US pork, according to the company’s CEO, Richard Bond. No timetable has been set as yet.
“We are as well talking to COFCO (China’s largest oil and food importer) about the possibilities to export to China. It is a tremendous opportunity in view of Chinese loses recently in their hog numbers,” said Bond.
Bond is however unsure when a deal could be reached.
Other US meat producers such as Smithfield Foods Inc reported negotiations with the Chinese last year for deals involving the sale of around 60 million lbs (30,000 tonnes) of US pork to China.
