Major swine operation looking to expand

18-12-2006 | |

PIC USA, a swine breeding operation with 3,000 sows producing 60,000 baby pigs a year, wants to expand into Campbell County within two years.

PIC runs two “genetic nucleus farms,” one in Kentucky and one in Saskatchewan, Canada, with plans to relocate the Kentucky operation to Campbell County.

The US$17 million multi-building facility would employ approximately 57 staff members, said Marly Hiatt, business development manager for the company. The PIC operation would have five sites ranging from 5 – 30 acres.

Opponents have concerns about odour and waste handling and supporters point to the economic boom for the county. Nevertheless, everything is in place for the project except the required state permits. According to Hiatt, the process for obtaining permits has begun through the Department of Natural Resources.
