Decline in British bacon and ham production
UK bacon and ham production in the third quarter of
2006 fell about 2% in comparison to the second - to 73,600 tonnes.
These figures were released by the UK department for environment, food
and rural affairs, Defra.
Total production in the first three quarters of this year reached 140,400
tonnes, down 6% on the same period in the previous year - the lowest production
since 1993.
The fall has been driven mainly by a continued fall in
the UK pig population.
