An opportunistic organism
S. suis infection is an increasingly common cause of losses in all major
swine producing countries. It is present on many farms, while the clinical signs
of the disease are seen on only some of them. Outbreaks of S. suis infection are
increased in herds with co-existing PRRS virus and when immunity is compromised
by environmental stress, such as over-crowding or teeth
cutting.
