PEDv causes pork price hike in US
Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED virus), threatening pork production, has already resulted in a price increase in Japan, while in the US the cost of pork is up by 45%.
With pork prices increasing in Japan, and with a reported increase of 17% of wholesale prices of pork carcasses traded on markets across Japan to 484 yen/ kg ($2.13/ pound) in comparison to one year earlier, now in the US the cost of pork is up 45% since the start of 2014 according the Chicago Board of Trade, according to UPI.
PEDv has resulted in concerns that there will be a shortage of pork products. This has caused the price of pork meat to soar.
PEDv causes diarrhoea and vomiting in adult pigs, while it kills mainly piglets. USA, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, the Dominican Republic, China, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan have all been confirmed PEDv.
Thus far, PEDv has killed almost 6.8 million pigs in 27 states since last May.
