US: PED virus in Wisconsin

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PEDv) has been found in Wisconsin. PED virus, is especially fatal to young pigs. In early August, PED virus was confirmed to be present at 461 farms in 17 states in the United States.

The American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) has said that samples from Wisconsin were submitted and tested positive for PEDv earlier this month.

“This is a very serious disease. If you are raising sows get this disease, you will lose up to 100 percent of your baby pigs for four to six weeks,” stated Warren Wilson, technical service veterinarian for Merck Animal Health, and member of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians.

Diarrhea and vomiting occurs with PED virus, and variable mortality – up to 100% among young pigs.
