Belgian farmers’ union: Private storage is of no use

The Belgian farmers’ union Algemeen Boerensyndicaat (ABS) sees no use in the private storage of pig meat. European Agricultural Commissioner Phil Hogan recently announced a new scheme providing aid for private storage (PSA) for pig meat in order to support pig prices.

”We would rather prefer measures that will lead to a more balanced and healthy pig market in the long term in Europe, such as a subsidy for slaugthering lighter pigs,” ABS says.

No solution for the pig farmer

ABS is happy that finally something is done to support the pig industry and also agrees that private storage will indeed lead to higher prices by lowering supply. But those prices will come down again significantly when the meat sooner or later comes to the market, ABS argues. ”This is not a solution for the pig farmer, for him the subsidy is of no use. It only supports the companies that exploit the storage facilities.”
