Georgia increases pork imports
Despite the increase in domestic production in recent years, Georgia continues to import about half of all pork consumed in the country, according to statistics.
Thus, according to the National Statistics Office of Georgia in 2013, pork production in Georgia amounted to 14,900 tonnes compared to 12,000 tonnes in 2012, while imports reached 14,700 tonnes compared to 11,800 tonnes in 2012.
Over the past few years, pork production has increased slightly, from 12,800 tonnes in 2010 to 14,900 tonnes in 2013, with imports in 2010 amounted to only 6,500 tonnes, so for the past three years it has more than doubled.
Experts say that in the next few years, the pace of growth in the demand for pork in Georgia will drop, seriously exacerbating competition between domestic producers of pork and imported products.
According to data of the National Statistics Office of Georgia a slight decline in production may be observed this year, as during the second quarter of the year, the total number of pigs on farms was a third less than in the second quarter of 2012. At the same time, according to the report imports continued to grow.
