Japan: New rules for live pig imports
Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea virus (PEDv) is of major concern in Japan. The country has implemented new certification rules in order to stop the spread of PEDv.
According to report by WNAX, the new certification rules require that live pigs imported to Japan the United States and Canada must have certification that the animals come from facilities that are PEDv-free, and have been so for at least 12 months. Japan told a World Trade Organization committee that the new rules are to fight the spread of PED virus.
Trade concerns
According to the report, Iowa Pork Producers president Jamie Schmidt stated that Japan’s concerns are valid but trade officials need to make sure it doesn’t become a long term trade barrier.
The live pigs exported to Japan also must test negative for PEDV during pre export isolation and inspection.
