Russian pork production to increase by a million tonnes

In the coming years, the industrial production of pork in Russia will grow systematically and for the period 2014-2020 the total figure of growth will amount to 1 million tonnes in live weight.

This forecast will become reality due to the continued support of the industry, said the CEO of the National Pig Producers Union Yuri Kovalev.

“In the next 4-5 years, we expect a further rise of pork production by about 200,000-250,000 tonnes per year of live weight in the sector of industrial pig farming,” he said last week at the Dairy and meat industry exhibition. “This will require investments of more than RUB 100 billion (US$3 bn). During recent years, we have already allocated about RUB 350 billion (US$10 bn), and now we still need a third of this investment amount to grow by another 900 000 – 1,000,000 tonnes.”

According to calculations of the National Pig Producers Union, 300,000 tonnes of this increase will go to cover the growing pork consumption in the country which will rise by 1.5% per year until 2020 (from 3.3 million tonnes to 3.6 million tonnes).

Another 100,000 tonnes will go to replace the drop in production of the old pig farms, another 200,000 tonnes  will allow the country to decrease imports from 1,000,000 tonnes to 800,000 tonnes. 300,000 tonnes will replace the decreasing production of private pig farms from 800,000 in 2013 to 500,000 tonnes in 2020. The remainding 100,000 tonnes will be exported.
